At Home Teeth Whitening: Does it Work?

 In Lifestyle

I’m not a coffee drinker but I’m severely addicted to tea and bubble tea.

I’ve been thinking about using teeth whitening and I’ve tried the over the counter before but with my sensitive teeth and gums, I quit after with just a few uses. Recently, I got approached by Smile Brilliant to try their Professional Teeth Whitening. I thought to myself, I should give it another go and this time, I want to make sure I do it right and stick with it. I’m so glad that I did because I’m really loving my results! After all, your smile is your best accessory so you definitely want a bright one.

In this post, I want to walk you through the process and what my actual thoughts on the product. When they sent me the T3 Sensitive System (for light stains) box, It was carefully packed with 3 whitening syringes, 3 desensitizing gels (to protect your teeth from sensitivity), and the materials you need to create the molds of your teeth that will serve as your whitening tray. It also includes a step by step guide to every process. I really liked that the directions were easy to understand, and that there is contact information just in case you need help.

First Things First

You will have to create a mold of your upper and lower teeth. You mix the base into the catalyst paste until it gives you a putty like consistency. The directions told me that I only had a certain amount of time to mix this and put it in the tray provided or it will start to harden. After mixing it, I spread the putty into a tray and made sure it was covered. Then it was time for me to make my teeth impressions. Make sure that you bite into it with your natural bite and hold it in for a few minutes.  Repeat the steps for your lower teeth. Let the putty sit and harden for about 30 minutes, rinse it and dry. Now you’re ready to send your impressions back to the lab so they can customize your trays!

Are you ready to whiten?

I felt like the coolest kid on the block when I got my whitening trays. Okay back story, I didn’t get braces when I was younger and I remember wanting them so bad cause I saw my friends with the coolest retainers that reminded me of these trays ha! Okay back to business peeps…put a strip of the whitening gel in the whitening trays. They say that each pack is a 3 time use but I used mine 4 times. You really don’t need to put a lot of product into the tray. Brush your teeth with just water. NO TOOTHPASTE. The first time I used it I was a bit scared that it would burn my gums but after reading the tips that came with the kit, I found out that putting coconut oil in your gums actually help with the burning. I used mine for two weeks, every other day,  and left it in for 45 minutes. It’s good to do this process before going to bed for maximum use. In my case, it worked out really well because I would do it after the kids were in bed and I had time to relax and just do my thing before sleeping.

After you whiten, it’s important to use the desensitizing gel. This protects your teeth from the whitening gel with sensitivity. Just like the whitening gel, rinse the whitening trays and replace with the gel. I left mine on for about 15-20 minutes. Remove tray and don’t rinse. And viola! you’re all done!

What do I think?

I haven’t tried a lot of teeth whitening product but I’m very happy with Smile Brilliant. I saw changes just a couple of days trying it. I loved that the box came with clear instructions and had great tips for how to use each item that’s on there. Yeah sure it’s not cheap at $139 but you’re getting what you pay for. I will continue to use this product and I’m very excited to flash my new smile around Portland. Can’t wait for our family holiday photos! For sure you will see me cheesin’ really big!
