Wonderwall Wednesday: Culottes and NW Lovejoy
Happy humpday peeps! I swear my Mother had me wear culottes when I was younger. I liked wearing it because I could still play and run around with something that looked like a skirt but it was really pants, so no one can see my what’s underneath. Who even thought of this trend anyways?
Back in the middle age, upperclass French gentlemen wore them but they were tighter on the leg. During the French revolution, 1789-1799, the revolutionary fighters were known as the sans-culottes, (without culottes) as they were rejecting this aristocratic system.
During the victorian era, women would have not been able to ride a horse or a bicycle without a split skirt. They had to make sure to give the illusion of still wearing a skirt so the culottes were born as a fashion statement. They still had to have a skirt wrapped around it to be “accepted”. In the 1930’s the culottes brought in much hate in the social light because if you were to wear such clothing, you were associated with “lesbianism” {geesh! How crazy is that!!} But now, we have embraced the culottes and it’s back in full swing! I love how comfortable it is and I love the flowy material that can still be dressed up!
By the way, for the second week of my wall obsession, I wanted to shoot this outfit in front of this awesome cab wall in the northwest. I love this wall because of it’s vintage look and the typography is pretty awesome!
